Vegan Hot Chocolate

This delicious vegan and refined-sugar free hot chocolate will make you crave more! It’s super delicious and even better when topped with marshmallows!

Happy New Year everyone! Well, almost! It’s only a few days until the new year and even though it’s forbidden to do fireworks this year, I am excited for 2022 to start. I love seeing fireworks at midnight but I think there will still be an official display at least. 2021 has been many things – wonderful, busy, relaxing, stressful, inspiring, delicious and hard. Let’s see what 2022 brings!

When we go for a family walk in fall or winter, we often make hot chocolate after we get back home into the warmth. The weather can get really cold here in Germany and hot drinks are such a lovely treat! I like tea as well but our three boys normally go for hot chocolate.

However, when our boys ask for hot chocolate, it makes me also want one! But since I’m trying to avoid dairy and refined sugar, I can never join them. Imagine me staring at their cups in envy! So I have been working on a hot chocolate version for me that is equally delicious and easy to make. So I present to you a vegan and refined-sugar free hot chocolate that will leave you craving for more!

It’s really easy to make. You need almond milk, ground cinnamon, date syrup and unsweetened cacao powder. No more store-bought mixes with lots of added sugar and additives for me! This is much better! And best if you top it off with vegan marshmallows! If you can’t find them in the shops, you can also make them yourself although I haven’t done that yet. Here is a recipe for vegan marshmallows that looks divine!

Instructions

  1. In a cup, mix cacao powder, ground cinnamon and date syrup together until it forms a thick paste. 

  2. Heat up the almond milk in a pot. 

  3. Mix a bit of the hot almond milk with the hot chocolate mix in the cup. Stir well. Add in the rest of the almond milk and stir until all is well combined. Top with marshmallows. Enjoy!
