Peanut Butter Recipe

My five year old son kept me company while I was busy typing the ingredients for this recipe this morning. When he saw the photos and recognized the peanut butter he has helped to make many times before, he asked me an important question. Why are you posting this on your blog, mummy? Everybody knows how to make peanut butter! That's because we've been making peanut butter together for years and when he was too small to help, he saw me make it!

Peanut butter is definitely one of the staples in our house. A batch of this usually lasts us about a week so I make it on a regular basis. It was about 15 years ago that I really got into peanut butter. Quite late, you're right, but peanut butter wasn't really a thing in Germany until quite recently. I discovered it on a trip to New Zealand and absolutely loved it. My back then boyfriend and me were doing a roadtrip through both islands for a few months and peanut butter was just so practical to eat on the road. And tasty, let's not forget tasty! It doesn't go off, it contains lots of protein and it fills you up.

When I came back to Germany, I really missed it and tried to find ways to make it myself. And I realized it's so easy so I wanted to share it with you! Now, it won't be that ultra creamy texture of the store bought peanut butter (you know the kind) but I much prefer the consistency of this one. This peanut butter is slightly runny, spreads beautifully and is slightly crunchy. If you like crunchy peanut butter, this is your thing.

Many brands today add ingredients like sugar, vegetable oil, and trans fats that can reduce its nutritional value. Do ingredients like sugar and trans fats in a peanut butter sound appealing to you? Not to me. This peanut butter recipe uses just peanuts. That is, if you use roasted salted peanuts. I have also made this many times using unsalted roasted peanuts and then added a little salt myself. That way, you can really control the amount of sodium in your peanut butter!

This recipe is really so simple. You basically just blend, blend and blend the peanuts until they become peanut butter! Yum! So what are you waiting for? When will you be making this super simple peanut butter?

It goes really well with porridge in my opinion! How about putting some on top of my Strawberry Milkshake Oatmeal?

Do you still buy peanut butter at the shop? It's so easy to make your own! Only takes a few minutes and you only need one ingredient. You can make this beautiful sugar-free peanut butter in only a few quick steps!

Ingredients
  • 2 cups salted roasted peanuts (OR 400g of roasted unsalted peanuts)
Instructions
  1. Add all of your peanuts to a blender. I use my Philips blender jug in combination with a hand-held blender. Obviously, if you have a stronger blender, that's the better choice but this one works just fine as well.

If you're using unsalted peanuts but you want the peanut butter to have a bit of a salty taste, you should add some salt - start with 1/2 tsp of salt and see if that is the right amount for you.
  2. Top view of a mixing jug with crushed peanuts in it

Blend the peanuts for a minute or so until they are all crushed. Your mixture should look like on the picture.

  3. Top view of a blender jug with crumbly peanut mix

Use a silicone spatula or a spoon to push the peanut mixture down in the blender. Blend until the mixture is crumbly. You can see what it should look like after this step in the picture.

  4. Top view of peanut butter in the making in a blender jug

If necessary, push the peanut mixture down again. Then keep blending until the mixture looks creamy like in the picture. At this point, don't stop! Keep blending for another minute or two until the consistency is super creamy. Enjoy!
